In line with the professional opinion of all authoritative international organizations, including the World Health Organization, at least FFP2 or FFP3 filter class respiratory protection must be used to ensure the respiratory protection of healthcare personnel when treating suspected COVID-19 cases based on the case definition.

Figure 1

Figure 2

What does FFP mean?

The FFP value is a number used to identify respiratory protective devices. The abbreviation FFP stands for „ffiltering face piece“, i.e. protective equipment with a filter for the face. They are classified from 1 to 3.

The FFP1 respiratory protection mask or dust mask is only suitable for filtering solid particles. It protects against non-toxic dust and water-based aerosols. It is typically used when handling stones and in environments with cellulose materials, but it is also well suited for use in the construction industry as protection against dust.

FFP2-rated respiratory masks or dust masks provide protection against mildly toxic or irritating solid aerosols and liquids. They should be used in situations where these substances are present in the air. Such substances include sawdust particles released into the air during the sanding of softwood, work with various composite materials, etc.

The highest level of protection is provided by FFP3-rated respiratory masks or dust masks. They are suitable for protection against toxic and harmful dusts, fumes, and aerosols. Devices belonging to this protection class also filter out carcinogenic and radioactive contaminants and, most importantly in our case, pathogens, viruses, bacteria, and fungal spores.

When purchasing a mask, always check what level of protection it offers. Don't make the mistake of thinking that wearing other masks that give a false sense of security will make you immune to the Covid-19 virus.

Wearing a respirator mask or mask:

When using a respirator correctly, it should seal around your mouth and nose, with the edges completely sealed against your face. It is important to know that when you breathe in, air always chooses the path of least resistance, so if there is a gap between your face and the mask, the air will find its way through. Ambient air bypassing the filter system weakens the protective capacity of the respirator. When using a respirator, it is important to ensure a proper seal between the edge of the respirator and the wearer's face. If the fit is not proper, contaminants, bacteria, viruses, and fungi can enter under the respirator through the gaps, creating a constant connection between the individual and their harmful environment.

All other non-FFP masks are designed to protect the wearer from droplets entering and exiting the mouth directly. These masks only cover the mouth to prevent or hinder the entry of droplets in the air that are significantly larger than aerosols. The disadvantage of these devices is that they do not filter the air. Their advantage in this case is that they significantly reduce the number of unintentional touches to the face. This prevents pathogens that have come into contact with the hands from entering the body. Their use is recommended for patients so that they do not spread the infection further.

Figure 3

In addition to protective capabilities, comfort is another important factor. If wearing a respirator is uncomfortable for an individual, there is a risk that the wearer will not wear it for the entire duration of the emergency.

Key information for correct fitting of respirators:

In all cases, protective equipment must be removed from the packaging in a „clean” place, with uncontaminated hands;

When touching the respirator, always try to touch the outer surface of the protective equipment so that the inner surface remains free of contamination;

Hold the respirator against your chin, separate the upper and lower straps, then pull the upper strap over your head and the lower strap under your ears, and adjust them to fit comfortably.;

When attaching the lower and upper straps, make sure that the straps do not twist;

Smooth the nose clip along your nose so that you do not feel any airflow around your nose when inhaling.;

When putting on the protective device, use both hands to ensure that it fits snugly against your face.

Figure 4

Additional important information before/during the use of respiratory protection:

It is recommended to remove facial hair in order to ensure adequate insulation of the respirator, thereby preventing harmful substances from entering the inner surface of the respirator through gaps created by facial hair.;

If you have long hair, it is recommended that you tie your hair back in a ponytail.

Fit test (valved and non-valved respirators)

In all cases, make sure that the respirator fits your face properly;

Carefully and gently cover the respirator with both hands,

If the valve does not have a breathing guard, exhale strongly!

If the breathing valve is equipped with a valve, inhale strongly!

If you feel ill, or are going to a place where there may be large numbers of people, or are unfamiliar with the conditions there, we strongly recommend using the above-mentioned respiratory protection masks to reduce the risk of becoming infected or passing on the infection to others.

#stayhome

In the current situation, there is a lot of real and perhaps even more false information circulating about the properties and effectiveness of respiratory masks and their protection against viruses.
